In the U.S., one student drops out of school every 12 seconds.
That's a lot of students so far this school year.

To Boldly Go: Big Picture Learning’s Annual Principals’ Retreat 2008

December 10 - December 13, 2008

Location:

Sheraton Seattle Hotel
1400 6th Avenue
Seattle, Washington 98101

Overview

“…Seattle, the next frontier. This is the voyage of Big Picture Learning. Our three day mission: to enhance the skill set of school leaders. To strengthen culture and promote collaboration. To boldly go where no school network has gone before…”

During the varied sessions of To Boldly Go, Big Picture Learning’s principals’ network:

  • Delved deeply into the projects and processes of another Big Picture school during the visit to Highline Big Picture High School and through authentic conversations with students, deepened their own understanding of the outcomes of the design in their schools.
  • Listened to an engaging keynote from Dr. William Sedlacek explaining the non-cognitive variables, an innovative measuring system of success. Principals then engaged deeply throughout the weekend to thoroughly explore the ways in which these elements can be seamlessly integrated into Big Picture Learning’s assessment system.
  • Shared their own leadership story.
  • Received a detailed update on the recent findings, return rates, and next steps of Big Picture Learning’s innovative Longitudinal Study.
  • Worked together on self-identified subjects using an Open Space format.
  • Visited the Experience Music Project, an interactive museum dedicated to the art of music-making in the Northwest and beyond. Most notably, the museum featured an exhibit that focused on collecting a variety of oral narratives told by people intimately involved in the creation of music, film, and the performing arts.
