Part of The Big
Picture Company's public engagement work has been the production
of Public Service Announcements for television. These brief videos
have helped to change the way Rhode Islanders think about public
schools and education.
Three
of the PSAs available here were Emmy Award winners, while three
others were nominated for a Boston Emmy.

"Know
Us" This
was the first PSA produced by The Big Picture Company. It presents
our belief that it is hard to ever really know all of the kids
in a large high school. The students in this video graduated from
The Met in 2000. Most of them are now in college. The locations
are all around Providence, Rhode Island, with the city in most
of the backgrounds.
"My
Mentor" This
PSA shows students from The Met at their internships, doing real
work, alongside adults in the community who have volunteered to
mentor them two days per week. The students have little difficulty
finding adults who agree to work with a young person who shares
their interests.
"Once
Upon a Time" Today's
high schools often pass kids through without ever knowing who
they are. Students are processed, and left to deal with difficult
situations with very little guidance or understanding. This PSA
features illustrations by Greg Toby, a student at Rhode Island
School of Design. It presents how many kids feel in our big, impersonal
public education system. The voice over was done by a 3rd grader
named Ashley Wolk.
"All
The Same Within" The
concept for this PSA came from a Met student named Ben Forman.
It presents a simple look at the often complex issue of diversity.
"What
Does a Good School Look Like?" A
good school can look like many things. This PSA presents some
of the components that The Big Picture Company feels are most
important in creating schools that can truly meet students' needs.
"Let
Me Love My Learning" In
this PSA, we hear from a student who looks at the public education
system as a customer, and wonders why the service is only so-so.
"I
Am The Future" This
PSA is in loving memory of Joseph Hector who was killed tragically
after a drive-by shooting in 2001. Shown here, he was one of the
Met students featured in this spot about the need for students
to be recognized and respected as individuals with tremendous
potential.
"Imagine
a Time" This
PSA touches on the importance of a student centered school, "where
the principal comes to your home to see how your child is doing."
