In the spring
of 2002, The Big Picture Company received funding from the Noyce
Foundation to do a three-year study of its
scale-up effort. The study is being used to provide immediate,
formative feedback to Big Picture on its efforts to generate and
sustain new schools around the country. In addition, the study
documents Big Picture’s effort as a case-study for other
organizations and programs that are interested in scaling up.

The head researcher
for the study is Joe McDonald, Associate Dean at New York University’s
Steinhardt School of Education. He is joined by advanced doctoral
students, Meg Riordan and Emily Klein. The first products of the
study are four essays: Scaling Up the Big Picture 1,2,3,and 4.
The final product will be a book that situates Big Picture’s
scaling up efforts among those of several other innovative high
school designs.
